Abstract

Financial reporting and management control have traditionally been studied as distinct organizational functions, yet their growing interdependence in digitally transformed organizations calls for an integrated conceptual account. This article reviews the theoretical foundations of both fields and examines how their convergence shapes contemporary organizational steering. Following a narrative literature review method, the study synthesizes academic and professional sources addressing the historical evolution of management control, the technological transformation of financial reporting, and the feedback mechanisms linking the two domains. The results show that management control has progressively shifted from budgetary and accounting-based control toward a broader, strategy-oriented process encompassing strategic, operational, and managerial levels of control, while financial reporting has evolved from manual ledgers to automated, real-time, and visually interactive systems supported by Business Intelligence and Accounting Information Systems. The discussion highlights that the effectiveness of management control increasingly depends on the quality, timeliness, and interpretability of financial information, and that automation, although efficiency-enhancing, requires sustained human judgment to preserve interpretative and ethical oversight. The article concludes that financial reporting and management control now function as a single, mutually reinforcing information-decision system.
