Economic Growth and Employment in the Agricultural Sector in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the relationship between employment in the agricultural sector and economic growth in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It employed the empiriocritical approach alongside documentary and observational techniques. The results of the econometric estimates, based on statistics from the World Bank database for the period 1991–2024, led to the conclusion that employment in the agricultural sector has no significant impact on economic growth. Imports and agricultural value added have a positive but non-significant impact. Conversely, foreign direct investment and inflation have a negative but non-significant impact.

The authorities’ efforts should focus on implementing effective agricultural policies that take into account the rehabilitation of transport infrastructure and marketing systems, as well as access to agricultural credit.
